Tony Amato, the lead singer had a shot at major musical success with a reorganized group in 1968 that was called the Bassetts, organized and produced by Artie Kornfeld, who had become the Vice-president of Rock Music for Capitol Records. According to Kornfeld, that group consisted of Tony Amato lead singer, Steve Gadd on Drums, Hugh McCrackin on guitar, and Tony Levin on bass. They cut a 45 with Kornfeld A side was A Little Love From You, which was Kornfeld's song, and So Bad, which Tony Amato wrote. Nearly every one Kornfeld produced made it to the charts and that list is pretty long, so The Bassetts had a good shot at becoming another major group, but their success was short-circuited when Kornfeld decided to quit Capitol records as its "Vice president of rock" and join with Michael Lang as founding members of the original Woodstock festival. I'm pretty sure that Kornfeld had planned to have The Bassetts do his song "The Pied Piper" which he wrote with Steve Duboff, but that went by the wayside. That song became a major hit when Crispian St. Peters got a hold of it and recorded it. After that Amato kicked around in a local band that he named The Big T Freak Session, with Lou Caliguiri on Bass, Sandy Giuffrida and Joe Perrone on Sax, and Chris Miller on guitar. I don't remember the drummer and the trumpet player's names, but they made up a pretty smoking Chicago-like band that played regionally for some years. One night in Long Beach, Long Island, while the band was taking a break off stage, a few drunk dudes went up on stage and began messing with the equipment. Amato went up there in an attempt to quietly dismiss these guys from the platform, when one of the drunk dudes came up behind Tony with a mike stand and bent it over Tony's back. All hell broke loose in the place. Luckily for the band and the club owners, two of Tony's older brothers were in the club too that night, and these guys had sledge hammers for arms, quintessential tough guys who ran up and quickly collapsed two guys on the stage down to the floor, while the other brother chased another dude out the side door, grabbed him and threw him bodily over one car and into the front end of another car, making him a very regretful, concussed, and bloody individual. A little bit of music history from the 1960s.

Did you take this image of the Cruise to the Moon 45 yourself? Can I have your permission to put it on a T-shirt? My father was one of the orignal doo-wop guys who used to sing on street corners with the guys from the Chaperones on Long Island, and he helped write this song. I'd like to commemmorate it on a T-shirt for him, but the T-shirt company has turned it down? Pls contact me [email protected]

Perfect for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11! 7/20/19! I was 11 years old then- since then, whenever I have heard this sweet song, on an oldies station or wherever, I think of the brave men who actually did "cruise to the moon"- in the words of the song, sailing on a dream "that will never die..."
