About The La De Das

Formed in the early sixties in Te Atatu, West Auckland, New Zealand, originally as The Mergers, The La De Da's were known for their RnB styled raucous performances. They were signed to but licensed to for NZ release. Their debut album is regarded as a garage rock classic and is hard to find. Moving to Australia in the late sixties they became one of that country's leading live acts until they split in 1975 with just Kevin Borich remaining from the original line-up.

Lyrics as I heard (I'm not English):
now that it's time to go
remember me
and the song that I sing
it's for you and for me

now they are calling from where I belong
sandman's brother
my father and mother
they call me (up)

death is the brother of sleep calling me
and the song that I sing
is for you and for me

I'd loved you dearly
but now it's good-bye
I'll always think and remember you
up in the sky
bye bye

don't you be sad just say one prayer for me
and the song that I sing
it's for you and for me

shed not a tear for me
just wish me well
just where I will go
I'm quite sure I don't know
but time will tell

now that I'm leaving you
remember me
and the song that I sing
it's for you and for me

I'm not afraid it's just something I'll know
I will return to you for it is nearly to see(k)
I go
I go

I was at EMI Studios -Sydney where they were recording this album.. Phil Keys is their Lead singer - the group were from NZ...Adrian Rawlins is doing the talking... A wonderful Kiwi group, with a big following in NZ and Australia.. They were one of our groups..back in the 60's.. Kevin Borich Lead Guitar, Bruce Howard Organ, Trevor Wilson Bass, Drums Keith Barber...

I was at the Studio, when they were recording their songs, and Adrian was putting down his story of the Happy Prince... in Sydney... The lovely vocal of Phil keyes... I had the LP in Sydney but it got stolen, but found the CD in Auckland, so bought one for Kevin Borich as well, and posted it off to him...

Not one like and a dislike!!!!? What rubbish! This is a beautiful song that I love from an album  with great songs and the only problem is the stupid narration. Take that out and it's a killer record. With the narration in still really good, but a bit marred by the fruity upper class voice.

Back again, Prior to the L.P. being released The La De das, did '' Come & Fly With Me '' at the Discos...That was a Buzz to have a preview of it... I was surprised that the L.P. version was at a much slower tempo. What a thrill it was to often have have a Table right in Front/ Center about 3 m.from these guys ! They got Me Hooked on the sound of the Hammond Organ Swirling through a Leslie Speaker Box.They always did top Quality pop of the time & note perfect. Phil's voice was simply Magnificent.

As one of the few L.P. owners It's great to see ''THE HAPPY PRINCE'' has made it to Youtube. I have an Original, bought at the time & a copy on an anthology L.P. Have borrowed an Official N.Z. C.D. taken from vinyl & did a restoration from that. It became difficult due to the original having dialogue & music between tracks, so some creative work was required. I'm 63+ & used to go & see them at ''Here'' disco & around Sydney in the late 60s & they are my favourite Live band of All Time !
